Ascend Content

how an idea becomes a video worth filming

Two frameworks. The first takes you from something you noticed to a thesis you can actually defend. The second tells you whether the video is good, or whether you go back and start again.

ideation is the hardest part of all of this

Most people cannot work out what they should be posting about. Ideation is the most important part of content and it is also the most difficult, which is why so much of what gets made is just a reaction to whatever somebody else made first. These two frameworks exist so that ideation stops being a mood and starts being a process you can run on demand.

Framework one

think: the ideation engine

Run it yourself, or drop the whole thing into your AI when you are trying to come up with ideas. Either way it takes you from a blank page to an idea you have actually thought through, rather than a topic you have simply picked.

Framework two

ramble: the curated ramble

Everyone is talking about yapping right now. Yapping is aimless, and it shows on camera. A ramble that has been curated, where you can go on and on about one topic with a structure sitting underneath it, beats a yap by a mile.

Framework one

think

The front half of the work, before a camera is anywhere near it. It takes something you noticed and turns it into a position you can hold up under pressure. Follow it by hand, or hand the whole thing to your AI when you are stuck. Most content dies right here, because a take gets filmed before it ever becomes a thesis.

THINK

T and H were cut off in the source. Their slots are held below, in order, so nothing shifts when they go back in.

T

name to come

Slot 1

This entry was cut off entirely. Name and body both still to come.

H

name to come

Slot 2

The body survived. Only the name is missing.

A single observation is anecdote. A repeated observation is a thesis. Don't post until you've seen the thing three times. The repetition is the proof.

I

interrogate the take

What does everyone say about this pattern? What is the obvious take? Now, what is actually true? Where does the consensus get it wrong?

Your video lives in the gap between what people say and what is real.

N

name the mechanism

Why is this happening? What is the psychological, sociological or structural force underneath it? The mechanism is what turns a take into a thesis.

Sometimes you cite a thinker. Sometimes you don't. Either way you should know what is driving the pattern, not just describe it.

K

kick it out loud

Articulate it in your own voice before you write anything down. Voice memo. Walk and talk. Tell a friend.

The idea isn't real until it survives leaving your head. The version you can say in plain language is the version worth filming.

a take gets you a post. a thesis gets you a position

Framework two

ramble

Six checks that turn a yap into a curated ramble. Run them before you film, and again on the cut. This is a gate, not a suggestion. If the last one fails, you go back to the second one and start the idea over.

RAMBLE
R

rate per second

The first five seconds, and inside that, the first three. The hook, and whether you are riffing the concept or running a script.

  • What actually happens in the first three seconds?
  • Riff the concept, or run the script? Which does this idea need?
A

acquisition of the idea

Where the idea came from, honestly. The source tells you a lot about whether it is worth the shoot.

  • What prompted you to make this video?
  • Was it someone else's video?
  • Did AI give you the idea?
  • Was it a realization on a morning walk?
M

mastery of topic

The audience can tell. Faked expertise reads as faked expertise, and it costs you more than the view was worth.

  • Do you know your shit, or are you faking expertise?
B

bridging the gaps

A video should move someone. They should not be standing in the same spot at the end that they were standing in at the start.

  • Are you taking your viewer from one side to another?
L

limiting belief callout

Name the thing they are holding, then take it off them. This is the difference between a video someone enjoys and a video someone remembers.

  • Can your audience move past something they once believed after watching this?
E

execution

The final gate. Everything ties up, and the finished thing carries real weight.

  • Can you tie it all together and put a $2k price tag on it?
If the answer is no

Go back to A. Not back to the hook, not back to the edit. Back to where the idea came from, because that is where the problem started.

In practice

one finds it, one tests it

The first framework is slow and happens off camera. The second is fast and happens right before you shoot. Neither one replaces the other. A perfectly built thesis can still fail RAMBLE, and a video that passes RAMBLE on a thin idea is just a well made post about nothing.

notice it see it three times build the thesis run RAMBLE film
Before you hit record
  1. Have I seen this three times? If it happened once, it is anecdote and you are guessing.
  2. Do I know the mechanism? If you can only describe the pattern, you have a take, not a thesis.
  3. Have I said it out loud? If it has never left your head, you don't know yet whether it holds.
  4. Would I put a $2k price tag on it? If not, go back to where the idea came from.

If any of those is a no, the answer is not a better hook. The answer is a better idea.
